Traditional Engraving
In the past, monuments were carved by hand with hammer and chisel. Today, sandblasting is the most common technique. Sandblasting is valued because it produces clean lines without cracking the granite. However, it can slightly alter the stone’s natural shade, which may be important if the monument’s color is a key part of your design. Over time, weather and debris—such as dust, rain, and wind—can settle into the grooves and gradually soften the look of the engraving.
Laser Etching
Laser etching has become the modern standard for many memorials. Unlike sandblasting, laser technology doesn’t change the color of the stone and allows for extremely fine detail, making it ideal for portraits or intricate artwork. The precision of computer-guided lasers means that even complex custom images can be faithfully reproduced. Designs can also be hand-painted to add color if desired. The only consideration is that laser etchings, being shallower than traditional methods, may be more sensitive to wear.
